Our Aviary
During the breeding season we use flight cages to breed our African and Australian Finches, breeding cages 18” x 18” x 18” for our canaries and we have two large aviary style cages for our non breeding pairs. Our weaned youngsters are housed in double flight cages. In the off season we mix our birds in double flights and the aviaries so they all get plenty of flight room for exercise. Our canaries are mixed in with the finches until late January when they start coming into their breeding moods. We use full spectrum lighting fixtures on timers over all our cages plus the bird room has screened windows which allow direct sunlight in the summer months. I use natural branches for perches whenever possible and we add pine boughs to the floor of the cages once in a while just for the enjoyment of the birds. They get so excited to see the greenery and we get the fun of watching they play in the boughs.
Our birds are fed a mix of finch and canary blend, millet, a daily plus fruit, veggies, boiled eggs, cornmeal cakes, and greens twice a week. I like to use natural tree branches when I can and add a pine bough to the bottom of the cages for fun during the summer months. I also hang spider plants in the cages intermittently during the year. Cage cleaning is usually started on Mondays and sometimes takes two days depending on the number of cages, breeding birds, weather, and my stamina. I will add some more photos of our cage setups soon. In the mean time please note that although the middle and right photos show birds sitting crowded close together this is only because I am at the other end of the cages with my camera.
