Star Finch - Australian Finch

We call this pair Twinkle Twinke. The male Star has a brighter larger red area on the face. Females are paler and show less red. Star Finches get along well in a mixed aviary or large cage. They prefer a covered nest of wicker or will build their own covering over an open canary nest.

Female Star in front, male Star in back. Notice the lesser red coloring on the face area of the female.

Song: A nice soft lyric sang by the male. Sexing: The cock has a brighter more red area on the face.

Star Finches have surprisingly large eggs for their size. In fact the egg is as large as a Gouldian egg. Like most of the captive finches their eggs are white. Stars get along well with other finches and are capable of defending themselves from other larger finches. The males song is a pretty soft lyric and they sing rather freely. Diet: Finch mix, greens, veggies, fruit, boiled egg, millet spray. A good vitamin supplement is recommended. Stars do need a nail trim regularly as their nails grow rapidly.
