I was lucky enough to attend the 2006 Great American Bird Show (GABS) hosted by The Rocky Mountain Society of Aviculture in Denver Colorado. Wow, what an awesome experience! Meeting other bird fanciers and seeing all the products and birds from all over the US was the thrill of my life.
So many species of birds, Parrots, Parakeets, Parroletes, Cockatiels, Cockatoos, Canaries, Finches, Softbills. Lots of Canaries and Finches were on display and for sale, and a multitude of product vendors had their wares out to temp us all. We saw a large selection of beautiful Softbills, and so many species I’ve never heard of, let alone seen before. Of all the Canary breeders bringing canaries there was one not far from our booth that had some exceptional red factors and the little Fife canaries. He obviously took great pride in his birds and spent a lot of time preparing for this event as his birds were above average in conformation, color, and health. Hindsight has me still kicking myself for not bringing some of those beauties home. We also saw a couple of rare finches, and again I had not heard about these before. One being an English Tit of some sort that looked and sounded a lot like our wild Chickadees here in the US, and another pair of English finches from the sparrow family I believe.
And to top this once in a lifetime experience I entered two of my birds in the GABS show and.......... OH MY GOSH .... I even placed! Or I should say my birds did as their were the ones being judged. My YHWB Gouldian really did himself proud with 3 blue ribbons, a purple, and two plaques. The German Roller cock also did well with a blue and red ribbon and a plaque for him too. And me? Well I got a blue for best novice.
