Canary Facts and Breeding Tips

Much More Coming Soon

  • Did you know canaries are actually of the finch family?
  • Did you know that although the male (or cock) canary is famous for his song many females (or hens) also sing. The hens song is not usually as musical as the cocks nor do they sing as often.
  • Canaries can get along quite well in a mixed flight cage or aviary if not over crowed.
  • Canaries are extremely light sensitive. Poor lighting or over lighting can cause molting and breeding problems along with loss of song. Twelve hours of daylight is ideal during the summer months and 8 to 9 hours of light during the winter will insure your canary gets the needed rest from molting and breeding hormones.
  • When breeding crested canaries never breed crest to crest but rather a crest to a non crest for healthy well developed babies.
