The Blue-capped Cordon Bleu is our favorite of the African finches. In fact our first finch was a pretty little Cordon hen.
The bright blue coloring and quiet nature make them an excellent choice for even beginner finch fanciers. Blue-cap males are aggressive toward other males of their species and will attack and even kill each other during the breeding season if caged together. Therefore mixing more than one pair per cage is not recommended but they are peaceful with other species of finches.
Blue-capped Cordon Bleus are hardy and easy keepers. They do need added protein to supplement the live foods they devour in the wild. Boiled eggs or a commercial insectivorous food will supply the protein needed but a treat of live meal worms or crickets will delight them. Their pretty little song and busy, curious natures will steal your heart. However if you plan on breeding the Blue Cap be warned that they are not an easy finch to successfully raise young. They require lots, and I mean LOTS of live food along with greens, boiled egg, and a good soft food to ensure they do not toss their chicks.
